Wealthy businessman Jared Isaacman has been formally approved as the incoming leader of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, concluding an unusual confirmation journey where the President nominated him, pulled the nomination, and then put him forward again.

The 42-year-old, an amateur jet pilot who was the first non-professional astronaut to perform a spacewalk, is also the first NASA administrator in decades to come entirely from the private sector.

For many, the ultimate measure of his tenure will be determined by one crucial test: if NASA can return humans to the lunar surface ahead of China.

The President has stated explicitly a ambition for the America to create a permanent lunar base, both to enable harvesting materials and to function as a launching pad for journeys to the Red Planet.

Legislative Approval and Political Dynamics

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate cleared his appointment with a 67-30 vote.

Trump initially pulled the nomination in May, pointing to a "comprehensive examination of prior associations".

At the period, the president was publicly feuding with Elon Musk, one of his biggest supporters, with whom Isaacman has business connections.

The new administrator has stated he is now fully behind the administration's goal to mine the moon, putting him at odds with Elon Musk, who has argued that focus on the moon is a detour from the goal of reaching Mars.

Vision for NASA

In the present global space race, world powers are competing to exploit the lunar surface.

“Now is not the time for inaction but a time for progress because if we lag, if we make a mistake, we may be permanently behind, and the consequences could shift the global dynamics here on Earth,” Isaacman told lawmakers during his hearing.

The private sector veteran sees fostering more industry players as key to achieving those goals, according to a recently leaked document detailing his plan for NASA.

In his confirmation hearing, he stood by the blueprint, which he crafted when he was initially selected, but clarified it was a developing document.

His openness to multiple providers could also create a conflict with SpaceX. Recently, Isaacman applauded the issuance of a lucrative deal to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the main challengers of SpaceX.

In the strategy paper, he proposed NASA should increasingly partner with the scientific community, envisioning the agency as a "force multiplier for scientific discovery".

He pointed to the scheduled 2027 launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as a flagship example.

"Should we be on the verge of something remarkable - like deploying the Roman Telescope - I will consider all avenues to get the program to the pad, even funding it myself if that's what it takes to deliver the scientific results," he stated.

Personal Fortune

According to estimates, Isaacman's net worth is estimated at approximately $1.2 billion, accumulated through his payment processing company and the sale of his company that provided flight training and operated a private fleet of military jets.

The top job at NASA will be his initial foray in public office, a break from the last two people who served as head of the agency.

He will replace the former transportation secretary, who has served as temporary leader since the summer.
