This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
