The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
