The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
