The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
