The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Context for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
