Back in 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I figured to book a place to stay after getting there, however upon reaching the city, a large conference was happening and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could spend the night at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate around the clock. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I boarded public transport and started wandering near a gaming venue, thinking I might spend the night in a place operating all night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak to succeed at an interview the next morning, however, being a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed out of place since a young woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city center and asked if I was OK. I explained my situation and right away she suggested I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – a perfect solution, as that’s where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: a leftover filled rolls she brought back her evening job. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and safe for the evening.

In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she undertook being a woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. In those days I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she did that – but still deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not go to ANU, and I didn’t meet her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her act of kindness many times over. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
